Twenty years ago, when mobile phones first started to appear on selected shelves, nobody could have guessed that a Finnish company could take on the Japanese and win. How did Nokia become the number one mobile maker on the planet? Click through for a short glimpse at its impressive evolution.Established: 1865
How Nokia started out
Long before Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, the company that became Nokia was in existence. First operating as a wood mill, as the 20th century went by it opened factories, producing mechanical then electrical goods, before establishing a telecommunications division in 1967. This arm grew quickly, and by the 1980s Nokia was selling portable phones, such as the Mobira Cityman. One of the first adopters to the GSM digital standard for mobile telephony, it’s been a leading player ever since.
What it does now?
Today, Nokia is the world’s biggest mobile handset provider – it’s sold over one billion phones and makes up more than three per cent of Finland’s economy. It now concentrates its efforts across every conceivable type of handset, including its powerful Nseries smartphones, business Eseries range and elegantly simple devices such as the Nokia 5000. It’s also started to put greater focus on providing full-blown services, handheld gaming and serious mobile apps, such as Ovi, N-Gage and Nokia Maps respectively, and even has plans for a home entertainment system to sync with its products.
